25–29 April 2012, Co-Facilitator with Peter Finkelstein, MD and Sonia Nevis, PhD
Executive Personality Dynamics for Coaches
Wellfleet, MA

This program focuses on individual personality theory and assessment and its application to coaching. The practice of coaching requires the ability to understand quickly the personality dynamics of the person being coached; yet training in coaching does not generally provide in-depth education in assessing and working with these issues. This intensive workshop will focus on understanding and working with the characteristics and manifestations of narcissism, perfectionism and control, anger and conflict management, depression, and issues of self-esteem. Participants will explore how to coach each differently and how to know when referral is needed. Emphasis is on cases from participants’ practices in relation to personality dynamics and theory. The program is recommended for any experienced coach or consultant. Leaders may also find this program useful.

25–26 April 2011, Co-Facilitator with Philip Cohen, MCC
Portfolio Ventures: Practice and Mentorship for ICF Portfolio Success
Toronto, Canada

Earning a certification in coaching is recognized as a commitment to a code of practice and to the shared ethics and values of the coaching community. The profession of coaching is enhanced by certification activities that work to articulate both the art and practical applications of coaching. Although the science of coaching may be learned through academic study, learning the art of coaching comes only through practice, invited feedback, and reapplied practice. This workshop aims to support and assist those coaches who wish to strengthen their understanding of coaching as defined and subscribed to by the International Coach Federation (ICF). The workshop teaches the ICF Core Competencies and provides ample practice with feedback to enable integration of the essential skills requisite for portfolio certification success. Participants will learn how to coach the person “behind” the presenting issue, how to recognize the flow of the core competencies that enable coaching mastery, and how to spot the “issues” and choices that inform coaching interventions. In addition to workshop hours, each participant will have 3 private mentor coaching sessions with one of the facilitators. Participants will leave this workshop better prepared and grounded to successfully complete the ICF portfolio exam.

Presence and Use of Self in Coaching and Consulting: Essential Elements of Practitioner Mastery
Toronto, Canada

Presence and use of self are foundational concepts of Gestalt approaches: a self-aware and compelling presence, used with purposeful discretion, is considered an essential component of practitioner mastery that transcends specific tools or techniques. Accurate sensing of context, in-the-moment self-correction, and a creative ability to “see” and respond effectively to what is needed are signature demonstrations of presence and the active use of one’s self. Recently, discussion of these concepts has begun appearing more often across the coaching and consulting literature, where they are identified as integral and integrative competencies of both professional and personal life. How do we discover our own presence and hone our use of self in order to have an impact and “make a difference” with our clients?

Presence and use of self are relational manifestations that emerge only through engagement with others. This dynamic 3-day workshop offers experiential and interactive activities designed to heighten awareness of one’s presence and to help develop a practiced capacity to respond accurately and creatively in the moment. We will examine how theories of influence are internalized and affect our stance as agents of change, and explore embodiment practices that support our presence and enhance effective use of self. The abilities to track multiple issues in the moment and to act on the choice of response or intervention that makes the positive difference for the client are key variables in coach and consultant practitioner success. Join us for an intense and rewarding exploration into how presence and use of self bring added depth and value to the wholeness of your life, both professional and personal.

Leveraging Talent Through Executive and Organizational Coaching: Theory, Method, and Tools
Istanbul, Turkey

Organizational coaching demands integration of coaching knowledge applied to organizational contexts. Complexities integral to these organizational contexts pose important challenges for those who wish to be competent and engaged in organization-based coaching practices. This advanced coach certification program is intended for consultants and coach practitioners who seek to deepen their knowledge and skills in executive and organization-based coaching.

This training is offered in a two-session format, both involving theory and practice, with each session lasting 3 ½ days. We will focus on the core areas of organization-based practice: performance coaching, executive coaching, and applied business coaching strategies. We will provide participants with:

  • The strategies and tools of performance and executive coaching, three-tiered assessments (self, other, culture), and the blending of normative and descriptive assessments (instrumented coaching), amplified by the use of on-site, real-time coaching processes (observational coaching).
  • The strategies and tools of business coaching, with an emphasis on tools for multi-tiered assessment of performance (performance assessment coaching), multi-dimensional strategic planning (strategic planning coaching), and multi-option cost-benefit analyses (cost-benefit coaching).

Kurt Lewin Master Series, OD Network Annual Conference
Seattle, Washington

Dorothy finds that Lewin, a seminal contributor to the social sciences, is also a key figure for Gestalt practice. Lewin’s belief that “there is nothing so practical as a good theory” sits at the core of Dorothy’s commitment to developing coaching models in organizational change contexts that translate into sound application and practice. Dorothy will provide theoretical and experiential insights into Gestalt-based coaching practices integrated with personal theory, behavioral neurobiology, and leadership development models.

Presence and Use of Self: Awareness, Choice, and Impact
Toronto, Canada
17 ICF Core Competencies

A self-aware and activating presence are essential practitioner success variables beyond the use of specific tools and techniques. Presence is a life-long integration task that can be enhanced by professional development activities, including a practiced capacity to respond creatively “in the moment” and a clear demonstration of emotional intelligence and contextual assessment concerning what is needed in that moment. Whether one is a coach or a consultant, the skillful ability to track multiple issues and to choose the relevant intervention/response work together to influence successful outcomes. This workshop presents a pioneering conception of presence, experiential activities to heighten one’s understanding of presence, and interactive experiences to explore the impact one’s presence has on others. This will be an intense, dynamic, and fun-filled exploration of a factor that adds depth and value to practitioner excellence.

Executive Personality Dynamics for Coaches: Coaching Heroes, SHeroes, and Perfectionists
Workshop, ICF Annual International Conference
Montreal, Canada

This workshop aims to raise awareness—itself a transformational act—of the relevance and power of an integrated Gestalt/clinical perspective with relation to executive coaching. Personality dynamics reflect the habitual cognitive, affective, and behavioral traits elicited in response to environmental and situational factors. Executives and other leadership-level employees often experience derailment in their organizational careers because of chronic responses and behaviors that co-workers find abrasive and counterproductive. Such difficult leadership profiles include the “S/Hero” and the “Perfectionist.” Understanding both the underlying strengths and weaknesses of these profiles will result in greater coaching success with such individuals.

Enhancing Your Competency
Istanbul, Turkey
ICF CCEU’s awarded

Coaching has emerged as a distinctive competency and professional calling that supports learning and intentional change. This workshop will outline, experimentally explore, and practice the skills that constitute effective intervention from a Gestalt perspective. Organizational coaches, consultants, and business and human service professionals will find this workshop useful to learn 1) Gestalt theory, concepts, and methods; 2) tools for facilitating individual and small group change and development; and 3) data-based observations about one’s use of self and the impact of one’s presence as an intervener and coach. Extensive skill-building sessions, with faculty consultation and feedback, are integrated into the program. This workshop serves as an intensive introduction to the International Gestalt Coaching Program (IGCP), the first Gestalt-based coaching program in the world to be accredited by the International Coach Federation, which Dorothy co-founded and co-chairs.
