Whether with or without awareness, sporadically or chronically, our Cycle of Experience may be interrupted. Any change, even if desired, provokes resistance as a natural response. Accurately assessing and setting boundaries in choosing what to do, or with what or whom to engage, is a life competency. Gestalt regards resistance as an adaptive, creative aspect of self-integrity—one of the essential conceptual differences that makes the Gestalt approach to learning and change so powerful. Gestalt coaches are most interested in identifying and working with unaware patterns of resistance that no longer serve the client’s needs or wants, and that block the client’s ability to reach his/her goals.
